9.20ට පෙන්වූ 9.05 හෙවත් හේම නලින් නොමරා මැරීම

මසකට වරක් පමණ කාර් බැටරියෙන් ආරෝපණය කළ යුතුවූ කළු සුදු රූපවාහිනියක් 80 දශකයේදී අපේ ආලින්දයට පැමිණීමට පෙර අපේ ප්‍රධානම දැනුම සහ විනෝදය සපයන්නා වූයේ ටෝච් බැටරිවලින් වැඩකළ ගුවන් විදුලියයි. බොහෝ සෙයින් ගීතවලට සවන්දීම, ප්‍රවෘත්ති වලට සවන්දීම, සහ නාට්‍යවලට සවන්දීම සහ 7.30ට අප්පච්චී නිසාම කවදාවත් අමතක නොකර සවන්දුන් විදෙස් පුවත් වලට සවන්දීම පමණකට සීමාව තිබූ ගුවන් විදුලිය එකල පාසල් සිසුන්වූ අපව අලුත්ම ලොවකට රැගෙන ගියේ ප්‍රේමකීර්ති ද අල්විස් මෙහෙයවූ “සැරිසර” පුවත් සඟරාවයි.”

කාර් බැටරිය ආරෝපණය කරගැනීමට තිබුණ අපහසුව නිසාම – එකල කාර් බැටරිය ගමේ වෑන් කාරයා වූ චුට්ටේ අයියාට නොවඳිනා වැඳුම් වැඳ අනුරාධපුරය නගරයට යැවීමට සහ ගෙන්වා ගැනීමට තිබුණ කරදරකාරී සහ සංකීර්ණ මෙහෙයුම නිසා – සාමාන්‍යයෙන් අපි රූපවාහිනිය නැරඹුවේ දිනකට ඉතාමත්ම සීමිත වෙලාවක් පමණි.

මොකක්දෝ හේතුවකට එදා රෑ 9.00 පහුවෙනකල්ම (පොඩි අයියාට හොරෙන්) රූපවාහිනිය නරඹමින් සිටි අපට ඉතාමත්ම අපූරු තේමා වාදනයක් ඇසුණ නිසා රූපවාහිනියෙන් ඇස ඉවත ගැනීමට නොහැකිවිය.

ඒ තේමා වාදනයත් සමගම තිරයට පැමිණියේ සුන්දර සිනහවකින් මුව සරසාගත් ඉතාමත්ම ප්‍රියජනක තරුණයකුගේ රුවයි. ඒ වෙනවිට රූපවහිනියේ නිවේදකයන් අනුගමනය කරමින් සිටියේ දැඩි සංයමයකින් සහ ඒකාකාරී බවකින් යුක්තවූ කෘත්‍රිම භාෂා විලාසයකි. ඉන් බැහැරවූ ඉතාමත්ම සිත්ගන්නාසුළු සැහැල්ලු විලාසයකින් කතාකළ මේ තරුණයාගේ නම හේම නලින් කරුණාරත්න බව අප දැනගත් අතර ඔහු එක රැයෙකින් “තරුවක්” බවට පත්වුණි. ඔහු මෙහයවූ වැඩසටහන සඟරාමය වැඩසටහනක් වූ අතර එය නම්කර තිබුණේද ඒ වනවිට අමුතු නමක් වූ “9.05” නමිනි.

9.05 සඳහා තෝරාගෙන තිබුණු තේමා සංගීතය ඉතා මියුරු මෙන්ම අමුතු වූයෙන් මම බොහෝ කලක් එම මුල් සංගීත ඛණ්ඩය සෙවූ අතර පසුව අහම්බයෙන් නැරඹූ Barry Levinson අධ්‍යක්ෂණය කළ, ඔස්කාර් සම්මාන උළෙලේදී, Dustin Hoffman හොඳම නළුවා කළ, Tom Cruiseගේ මුල් යුගයේ චිත්‍රපටයක් වූ “Rain Man” චිත්‍රපටයේ බව සොයාගතිමි.

එක රැයකින් 9.05 කොතරම් ජනප්‍රිය වුණාද කිවහොත් සති දෙක තුනක් යනවිට 9.05 පටන් ගත් වෙලාව 9.05, 9.10, 9.15 සහ 9.20 දක්වාම දික්ගැස්සුණේ වැඩසටහන වටා රොක්වූ අධික රසිකයන් පිරිස නිසා වැඩසටහනට පෙර රූපවාහිනී බලධාරීන් අසීමිත වෙළඳ දැන්වීම් ප්‍රමාණයක් බලෙන් එබ්බවූ නිසාය. හේම නලින් මේ ගැණ සිටියේ නුරුස්සන ස්වාබවයකින් බව අපට දැනුණෙ එක වැඩසටහනක් අතරතුරදී ඔහු “දැන් අපිට වැඩසටහනේ නම 9.05 වෙනුවට 9.20 ලෙස වෙනස් කරන්නට වෙයිද දන්නේ නැහැ” කියා සුපුරුදු සිනාමුසු මුහුණෙන් කියූ බැවිනි. සජීවී නොවූ, පෙර පටිගත කළ වැඩසටහනක් වූ වැඩසටහන එදා පමණක් හරියටම 9.05ට ප්‍රචාරය කරමින් (එකල සාමන්‍යයෙන් නොකළ ආකාරයට ) තිරයේ උඩින්ම 9.05 ලෙස වෙලාව සඳහන් කළේ හේම නලින්ට කෝචොක් එකක් දැමීමටය. එහෙත් කෝචොක් වූයේ රූපවාහිනියම බව අපට පසක් කළේ ඊළඟ සතියේ සිට ඔවුන් නැවතත් 9.05, 9.20ට (රෙදිත් ඇඳගෙනම ) ප්‍රචාරය කළ නිසාය.

දිගින් දිගටම සිදුවූ මෙවැනි සහ වෙනත් කෙනිහිලිවල ප්‍රතිඵලයක් ලෙස හේම නලින්ට රූපවාහිනියට ආයුබෝවන් කියා එතරම් ජනප්‍රිය නොවූ ස්වර්ණවාහිනිය වැනි වැදගැම්මකට නැති නාලිකාවක් ළඟ නැවතීමට සිදුවිය. මේ නිර්මනාත්මක මිනිසාට ස්වර්ණවාහිනියේ කරන්නට ඉටිගෙඩියක් නොවූ නිසා ඔහුගේම චන්ද්‍රිකා රූපවාහිනි නාලිකාවක් වූ Heritage TV (HTV) නාලිකාවට සේන්දු වීමට සිදුවිය. මේ වනතුරුත් චන්ද්‍රිකා රූපවාහිනී නැරඹීමට හැකිවී තිබෙන්නේ රූපවාහිනී නරඹන්නන්ගේ ඉතා සීමිත පිරිසකට නිසා හේම නලින් වැන්නකුගේ දක්ෂතා ඉතාමත්ම සුළුපිරිසකට පමණකට සීමා විය.

මම පහත සිද්ධිය කෙටියෙන් සඳහන් කරන්නේ ප්‍රසිද්ධ පුද්ගලයන් හඳුනනවා කියා පෙන්වීමට (namedropping) සඳහා නොවේ. මම ඩයලොග් චන්ද්‍රිකා රූපවාහිනී සේවයේ අධ්‍යාපන නාලිකාවක් වූ “නැණස” රූපවාහිනියේ උපදේශකයකු (consultant) ලෙස සේවය කළ කාලයේ හේම නලින් “නැණසේ” ඓතිහාසික වැදසටහන් නිපදවීම සඳහා යොදාගත හැකිදැයි සොයා බැලීම සඳහා මූලික සාකච්ඡාවක් සඳහා ඔහුට ඩයලොග් ආයතනයට ආරාධනය කළ පසු ඔහුත් සමඟ මිතුරුකමක් ගොඩනගා ගත්තේ ඔහු මගේ පාසල් කාලයේ සිට වීරයකු වූ නිසාය. (කෙසේ හෝ “නැණස” රූපවාහිනිය සමග මගේ සේවා ගිවිසුම හිතුවාටත් කලින් අවසන් වූ නිසා – වඩාත් නිවැරදිව කිවහොත් නැණස නාලිකාවට මම මෙලෝ වැඩකට නැති මිනිහෙකු බව වැඩි කලක් යාමට මත්තෙන් වැටහුණ නිසා – හේම නලින්ගේ වටිනා සේවය නැනසට ලබාගැනීමට නොහැකි වීමටත් වඩා ඔහු වැන්නකු සමග වැඩ කිරීමෙන් අලුතින් යමක් ඉගෙන ගැනීමට නොහැකිවීම සම්බන්ධයෙන් මම අතිශයින්ම කණගාටු වීමි.)

හේම නලින් මියයාමට සති කිහිපයකට පෙර මම ඔහුව දුරකථනයෙන් ඇමතුවේ ඩයලොග් ආසියාටා ආයතනය සහ BOV Capital ආයතනය එකතුවී ආරම්භ කළ ශ්‍රී ලාංකික venture capital ආයතනයක් වන Digital Innovation Fund මගින් නිර්මාණත්මක වැඩක් හේම නලින්ට සැලසුම් කළ හැකි නේදැයි යෝජනා කිරීමටයි. සුපුරුදු සිනහවෙන්ම මට ස්තූති කළ හේම නලින් ඒ සඳහා ව්‍යාපෘති වාර්තාවක් සැකසීමට බලපොරොත්තුවෙන් සිටියේය. එහෙත් ඔහු සමග සමග වැඩකිරීමෙන් අළුත් යමක් ඉගෙන ගැනීමට තිබුණ දෙවන (සහ අවසාන) අවස්ථාවත් අවාසනාවන්ත ලෙස මගෙන් ගිලිහුණි.

ජාතික රූපවාහිනිය පළ නොකියා පලා බෙදුවේ හේම නලින්ට පමණක් නොවේ. මා හිතන ආකාරයට බර්ට්‍රම් නිහාල්, ජයන්ත චන්ද්‍රසිරි, සද්ධා මංගල වැනි නිර්මාණශීලී මිනිසුන්ටද වෙන්නට ඇත්තේ මේ සංගදියම විය හැකිය.

මේ සියල්ලන්ම හිතුවක්කාරයන් බව මම පුද්ගලිකවම දනිමි. ජයන්ත චන්ද්‍රසිරි කිසිම දිනක මට හමු නොවුණත් ඔහුගේ නිර්මාණවලිනුත් ඔහු හිතුවක්කාරයකු බව සිතාගත හැකිය. මොවුන් සමග වැඩකිරීමට රාජ්‍යය ආයතන ප්‍රධානීන්ට පහසු නොවුවාට කිසිම සැකයක් නැත. මමත් රාජ්‍යය සේවයට අවුරුදු දෙකකින් ආයුබෝවන් කීවේ මමත් නහයට අහන්නේ නැති හිතුවක්කාරයකු වූ නිසාය. (මියයනතුරුම කිසිමදාක මගේ හිතුවක්කාරකම් අඩු කිරීමට මගේ බලාපොරොත්තුවක්ද නැත.) නමුත් ඔබ අවබෝධ කරගතයුතු වන්නේ ලෝකය නිතරම වෙනස් කළේ හිතුවක්කාරයන් බවය.

හිතුවක්කාරයන් ජාතික රූපවාහිනිය වැනි රාජ්‍යය ආයතනයන්ට දිරවන්නේ නැත.

ජාතික රූපවාහිනිය දැන් නිර්මාපකයන් වෙනුවට නිර්මා පකයන් බිහිකරන්නේ මේ නිසා විය හැක.

How easy is it to use Dialog easy cash?

I registered with Dialog easy cash the first time I heard of it. But I did not use it till the last month as there was no necessity. Now that I have used it once I think I should share the experience with you.

My niece sent me 1,500 LKR to my mobile to be given to her mother (my eldest sister) for an emergency. As it was already past 7 pm and most of the eZ cash shops were closed, I waited till next day to get the money through eZ cash and instead gave my sister money which I had with me.

Few days later I went to collect the money which came through eZ cash. I went to a phone shop which had the eZ cash logo in it and tried to get the money. But I found that my PIN was not matching with the PIN which was in the Dialog system. This surprised me as I put a PIN that I cannot forget. Then I asked the boy in the shop if I can get a new PIN by calling Dialog hotline. He answered in the negative and advised me to go to a Dialog Arcade and get a new PIN. So, I had to come back home as there was no Arcade close by.

But later I found that this was totally wrong information and I could easily get a new PIN by simply calling Dialog hotline. Having taken a new PIN I went to another shop with eZ cash logo and the boy there told me that I cannot take money and only send money since he doesn’t have money in the drawer. This was disappointing. I went to 4 other shops and all of them repeated the answer given by the first shop. Luckily, I was walking. Imagine the hardship if someone had to park a vehicle and walk into all 5 shops and get the negative answer!

I went to the 6th shop, the one I had the PIN problem in, and he told me that I could get money without a problem. I got 1,000 LKR and he deducted 20 rupees. That was not a big amount considering the relative ease compared to a bank that would ask for paperwork and confirming identity unless one has access to an ATM. There was no paperwork at any stage of the transaction from the registration. This was a big relief.

I think Dialog has to work on some scheme to solve the problem of eZ cash phone shops not having sufficient money with some kind of practical solution lest it would reduce the customers’ faith in the scheme.

There are a lot of plus sides with eZ cash such as sending and receiving money, buying stuff, paying Dialog bills and utility bills, etc. This works even during holidays.

Dialog eZ cash has to evolve further to bring the maximum benefits to the customer. Initiation is attractive and innovative. Hope this will branch out to more areas in transactions.

My six month contract as a consultant to Dialog’s Nenasa TV www.nenasa.lk ends today. It was an exciting experience to work with Dialog as I could work with a young and energetic team. I had a nice team who were caring and supportive.

Most of my time was spent at the Ministry of Education though I was employed at Dialog. There I had to coordinate Nenasa’s activities with Dialog and the National Institute of Education (NIE.)

Nenasa is an educational TV channel that is telecast to 1,500 public schools in Sri Lanka through satellite TV. Dialog donated 1,500 TV sets and satellite connections and has planned to increase it by another 500 early next year.

Incorporating TV to school curriculum has been quite a challenge but it is picking up slowly now. Kids can watch educational content produced by the NIE and some other government institutes over Nenasa TV. Unfortunately, channel is not accessible for households yet. Hope Dialog could open it to the masses soon.

Dialog TV and PEO TV

I have a Dialog satellite TV connection at home since 2007. I prefer CNN, Al Jazeera and NDTV newscasts over anything else as I am a person who loves to see what is happening around the globe. What I enjoyed most was the Barrack Obama’s election run up to the presidency in 2008. It was that sensational. CNN covered it very well. AL Jazeera covered the assassination of Benazir Bhutto extensively in December 2007. That shocked the region. NDTV’s best coverage was the covering of Mumbai Attacks in 2008.

I also enjoyed Z-Studio a lot as it telecasted popular English movies with English subtitles. Since I worked from home those days I didn’t miss many movies they telecasted. Among them, my favorite was Bruce Almighty though I couldn’t watch it in full.

I did enjoy History Channel, Discovery and Animal Planet too. I didn’t enjoy MTV much as almost all the songs they telecasted were Indian songs. I wish they telecast some Western numbers too.

I enjoyed 2007 cricket World Cup in the West Indies, the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa and the first IPL edition. Not to mention the football World Cup.

I missed DTV since 2009 as I spent some time in Mahawilachchiya. Though there was a DTV connection in Mahawilachchiya I watched it only when Prabhakaran was killed in May, 2009. After that I didn’t see much of DTV as I was in Anuradhapura most of the time.

From last month I started watching PEO TV as the owner of the house I reside at has subscribed to SLT’s PEO TV. What PEOTV offers is more or less similar to DTV. Notable exception is Maharaja’s Sirasa, MTV and Shakthi TV’s presence in PEO TV.

DTV broadcasts over satellite technology and it is available anywhere in Sri Lanka whereas PEO TV is broadcast over IPTV technology and available only where there is Sri Lanka Telecom ADSL connectivity. Both has its advantages and disadvantages due to depending on the said two technologies. DTV is ahead in coverage but the signals get weak when it rains. IPTV’s coverage depends on ADSL availability and the SLT says PEO TV works even during rain (weatherproof) but what I have seen is PEOTV’s signals get weak even without rain, let alone rain.

I am working for Dialog Axiata on a short term basis contract on Nenasa education channel. I was interested in newly launched Dialog service, Dialog eTeacher and thought of taking a course or two. I started from the basics. Rather than asking Dialog for a free ride, I myself subscribed to the eTeacher service paying the regular fee through my personal mobile phone and tested two courses, Ordinary Level Sinhala and English Literature. I tested with a Dialog dongle from the second floor of Dialog’s Dharmapala Mawatha office. The subscription and registration process for a course was not that complicated. But the instructions were only in English even for Sinhala subjects. I think instructions should be made trilingual to make it easier for the user.

I first took OL Sinhala course offered by popular (and controversial) tuition guru Mr. Upul Shantha Sannasgala as I too am interested in Sinhala language. I have a Distinction for it at OL and a B at AL. Sinhala was my favorite language but due to professional reasons, I have to use English more.

Price of the Sinhala course was 150 LKR, a reasonable fee, I think, for any student.

Downloading the video lessons took more time than expected. This was disappointing at the beginning but the quality of the video was excellent. This is the compromise one has to come when it comes to online video content. The faster the downloading, the poorer the quality; slower the downloading the richer the quality.

Video – As far as I think, camera angles of the videos should be more academic and static showing only head and shoulders. They shouldn’t have videoed in artistic methods like zooming in and zooming out, reflections on tables which can distract the student. Better to have the teacher seated or standing up in a more formal place than on a settee. Teacher should dress properly, not casually. Mind you, there are thousands who are against the discipline of the private tuition teachers and their dress codes and such sensitivities should be taken care of. Overall, lessons were done perfectly well given the short time period allocated for a video. Students will prefer the videos than any other format and the videos are not too long to bore the student.

Notes – Attached notes look comprehensive and yet simple. They will definitely inspire the student more than the text books as the presented format in the computer screen is new. The PDF files of the lessons did not have the common Unicode errors that contain when converting to PDF. Extensive examples on grammar rules are given and this would enhance the student’s knowledge further.

Audio – Audio lessons are very clear as expected. It gives more or less the same content in the video and the students who access the lessons with a slower connection can download the audio files instead. It would have been better if the audio and video files could be saved by the student but one cannot simply ignore the copyrights infringements that could obviously follow. You would see the Dialog content freely available in Pettah for a song.

I did have some trouble starting my second course OL English Literature and when I contacted the help line it was directed to Dialog’s regular hotline 077-7678678 and gave me the same options such as reporting about lost mobiles, billing information, etc. I think Dialog should customize eTeacher helpline only to serve its needs without the student having to wait till all the regular options are read out by the helpline for which the student has nothing to do with. However, the helpline girl helped me satisfactorily to start the second lesson.

The cost of English course was 375 LKR, more than twice the price of the Sinhala course.

English tutor is Ms. Dhunushka Medawatte and I hadn’t heard anything about her till I subscribed to the course. But when going through her credentials, I found that she is a lecturer in a reputed Sri Lankan university and possesses a Diploma in English and Literature plus DELF diplomas in French. She has a 2nd upper in LL.B (English Medium) and Diplomas in International Relations (Hons) and in Industrial Relations and Industrial Law (IPM.)

Notes – When going through her notes, one understands that she has thorough knowledge of her subject. Notes are clear and to the point. Lengthy notes are available where necessary with more information about the authors of respective literary work. (Keener students can go to Wikipedia and other sources independently of Dialog eTeacher and access more information about the authors and their work.)

Audio – No audio lessons were uploaded yet.

Video – Available lesson was ok but the sound quality was very poor. There was an unnecessary hum in the background.

In both the courses, Dialog has not uploaded the full course content yet. I think that would be done soon as the students have already paid for the full courses. Dialog SMSes the student whenever a new lesson is uploaded to the site but it would have been better to start a course with total number of text, audio and video files.

Dialog’s initiative is an innovative step to uplift education and bridge the Digital Divide in the island. I hope Dialog would make the courses available through mobiles as well in future by enabling mLearning too.
